Murtaza Ali khan is born in Rafat Mahal, Khasbagh Palace in Rampur. He is born on 22 November 1926. He is the son of Nawab Raza Ali Khan Bahadur. He is born in a Shia family. His father Nawab Raza Ali Khan became the Nawab of Rampur after the death of his grandfather Nawab Hamid Ali Khan Bahadur.

Murtaza started his school life in Rampur. Later he went to Dehradun where he studied at Doom School (Doom School was a boy’s private boarding school) and completed his primary and secondary education.

He went to Wellington College and St.Stephen’s College in Delhi and completed an Intermediate Education

Murtaza Ali Khan was a Shia Muslim. He was commissioned into the British Army in 1943. In 1946, he was promoted to captain and appointed as the brigadier of Rampur. After his father’s death, he became the titular Nawab of Rampur. He has also spent more than a decade of his life as the president of the Raza Rampur Library Trust. He was married in 1946 to Sakina uz-Zamani Begum Sahiba.
